This glass negative pairs two heavyweight boxers, Tom Kennedy and Joe Jeanette, and the title is the only identifying detail in the record, so it is worth noting that the Bain News Service's own caption data is unverified. Bain's staff worked in New York in the early twentieth century, when prizefighting drew large crowds to arenas and newspapers, and photographs of fighters were in steady demand for sports pages. Jeanette, a Black fighter, was among the contenders of that period who faced racial barriers to championship bouts, which gives portraits of him from these years added historical weight. The plate's small format, 5 by 7 inches or smaller, was standard for news work of the time.
