Warren, Ohio, in 1870 was the seat of Trumbull County, a town of the Western Reserve whose settlers had come largely from New England a few generations earlier. Its economy rested on the Mahoning River, whose falls powered mills and workshops, and on the railroads that had reached the valley in the 1860s and tied local farm produce and manufactured goods to markets farther east and west. The courthouse, the county offices, and the churches around the town square made it the center of legal and civic life for the surrounding farms. Residents of the period would have known Warren as a steady, practical county town, shaped by the lingering effects of the Civil War, when many local men had served and local families had sent sons and money to the Union cause. The map shows the town as its own residents saw it, with streets, mills, and houses set along the river and rail lines.

| Notes | An original bird's-eye view map of Warren, Ohio, drawn in 1870. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives.
