Mount Vernon, the county seat of Knox County in central Ohio, was a farm-market town of a few thousand people in 1870, five years after the Civil War ended. Its economy rested on the surrounding wheat, corn, and wool farms, which were sold and shipped from its warehouses and depots, and the railroad had made the town a more important trading point than it had been in the 1840s. Local life centered on the courthouse square, where county business, election politics, and Saturday trade drew farmers in from the countryside. A map drawn that year captured a town still growing outward from its old center, and residents of the time would have recognized it as the seat of a prosperous agricultural county.

NotesAn original bird's-eye view map of Mount Vernon, Ohio, drawn in 1870. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives.
