Akron, Ohio, in 1870 was a canal and milling town of roughly 10,000 people, built around the Ohio and Erie Canal and the falls of the Little Cuyahoga River, where water power turned grain mills and small shops. The canal had driven the town's early growth, and by the 1860s railroad lines ran through it, linking the farms of Summit County to Cleveland and markets farther west. As the county seat, Akron had a courthouse square, churches, and a steady flow of merchants and farmers coming to town. Residents would have known it as a busy canal and rail stop rather than the rubber center it later became, though that change was already beginning. In 1870 B.F. Goodrich opened a rubber works in the city, a modest start that few residents could have foreseen.

NotesAn original bird's-eye view map of Akron, Ohio, drawn in 1870. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives.
