The title places this view on a road near Reims, the cathedral city in northeastern France that lay close to the front during the First World War. The screens or netting strung over the roadway were a common wartime measure, meant to hide troop and supply movement from enemy observers in aircraft and on higher ground. The picture belongs to the George Grantham Bain Collection, made up of news photographs supplied by the Bain News Service, a New York agency that distributed images to newspapers and magazines in the 1910s. The record gives no exact date, and the title comes from caption information the agency recorded, so the location is best read as the agency's own description.
