Set at the Carlisle Indian Industrial School in Carlisle, Pennsylvania, this glass negative shows the school's printing shop, one of the trade rooms where students learned a skill alongside their academic lessons. Richard Henry Pratt founded the boarding school in 1879 to assimilate Native American children, and its vocational programs, printing among them, were central to that aim. The Bain News Service, a New York photo agency whose negatives make up this collection, documented many such scenes, but the record gives no date for this one, so its exact year remains uncertain.
