Rather than a single portrait, this chromolithograph gathers the captains of all twelve National League clubs onto one color sheet. Richard K. Fox, publisher of the *New York Police Gazette*, copyrighted it in April 1895 and later issued it as a supplement to the paper, which mixed crime reporting with boxing and sporting news. Chromolithography layered several color stones or plates to reproduce images cheaply, making supplements like this a popular way to put players' likenesses in front of ordinary readers. The sheet is a snapshot of the league's leaders in the mid-1890s.
