Atlantic City, New Jersey, in 1900 was a seaside resort of roughly 13,000 year-round residents, whose numbers swelled several times over once the summer season opened. The Pennsylvania and Reading railroads both carried visitors from Philadelphia and other inland cities, and their rivalry kept excursion trains and fares in steady supply. The Steel Pier, opened on the ocean front in 1898, drew crowds with a theater and amusements built out over the water. Hotel keepers, boardinghouse operators, and seasonal workers in the big hotels' kitchens and laundries made up the backbone of the local economy, and town politics often turned on how well the tourist trade had fared from one summer to the next.

NotesAn original bird's-eye view map of Atlantic City, New Jersey, drawn in 1900. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives.
