Atlantic Highlands, on the western shore of Sandy Hook Bay in Monmouth County, New Jersey, was a summer and steamboat town in 1894. Its growth depended on the Central Railroad of New Jersey, whose trains brought summer visitors from New York and other cities to the bayside terminal, where boats carried passengers across the water. Hotels and cottages climbed the rising ground above the harbor, while year-round residents who fished and worked the boats lived alongside seasonal boarders. The borough had only been set off as its own municipality a few years earlier, so its streets, water supply, and civic arrangements were still taking shape. This view shows the town's layout as it stood before the resort trade grew busier in the years that followed.

NotesAn original bird's-eye view map of Atlantic Highlands, New Jersey, drawn in 1894. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives.
