A still pond holds a mirrored Monticello in this view, with the house's columns and roofline doubled in the water. Thomas Jefferson designed the home on a hilltop near Charlottesville, Virginia, and kept revising it over four decades, drawing on the Palladian style he admired from books and his travels in Europe. The house also served as a working farm and the center of an enslaved workforce that Jefferson's own records document, a part of the estate's history that interpretive programs now address directly. Monticello was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987.
