Unlike the broader views of Monticello, this one centers on the small family burial ground where Thomas Jefferson was laid to rest after his death on July 4, 1826. He chose the simple obelisk himself and wrote its epitaph, which lists the Declaration of Independence, the Virginia Statute for Religious Freedom, and the University of Virginia, and leaves out his presidency. The title also refers to an obituary, a reminder that the nation's newspapers marked the passing of one of its founders with close attention.
