Three winged cherubs, each holding up a garland of flowers and grapes, are the detail that sets this piece apart from the other angel images on this board, since the playful trio stands in place of a single solemn figure. Garlands of this kind drew on classical Roman decoration, which artists revived during the Renaissance and carried into religious art, where putti (chubby winged children) filled walls, altarpieces and ceilings. Grapes carry a eucharistic meaning as well as a decorative one, linking the festive fruit to the wine of communion. Look closely at how the children's bodies twist and the garlands sag under their weight, a sign of the lively naturalism that defined the period.
