A glass negative labeled "Gehovick" and tied to West Virginia Wesleyan College in 1919 sets this picture apart from the other football views on the board. The National Photo Company, a Washington, D.C., studio active through the 1910s and 1920s, produced many portraits and sports views of college teams and athletes. The title comes from notes the company wrote on the negative or its sleeve and has not been independently verified, so the name should be read with that in mind. The glass may show streaks and small blemishes from the natural breakdown of its original coating, a common condition in negatives of this age.
