A biblical allusion drives this one: Jonah was the passenger thrown overboard to calm a storm, and the title "Chucking the Jonah" turns that story into a political joke. Sidney Greene drew it for *The Evening Telegram* in June 1915, weeks after the Lusitania was torpedoed off Ireland with many Americans aboard. That sinking intensified debate in Washington over whether the United States could stay neutral in the First World War. The caption tags point to Uncle Sam, the president, and neutrality, though the record's data is unverified, so the drawing itself is the best guide to who is being thrown overboard.
