The Declaration of Independence on this print is the image that appears on the back of the two-dollar bill, a choice made for the nation's bicentennial in 1976. The engraving-style scene is John Trumbull's depiction of the drafting of the document, which replaced the earlier reverse design showing Monticello, Thomas Jefferson's home. The swap placed a painting of a founding moment on a bill whose face already carried Jefferson himself, linking the note's two sides through the author of the Declaration.
| Notes | The denomination of two dollars was first used by the United States federal government in July 1862 and used continuously until 1966. In 1976 use of the two-dollar bill was resumed as part of the bicentennial with a new design on the back featuring John Trumbull's depiction of the drafting of the United States Declaration of Independence. This replaced the previous design of Monticello, home of President Thomas Jefferson who appears on the front of the bill |
