This cover from the September 1929 *Labor Defender* turns a local strike into a national call for action, with its headline urging readers to "Mobilize to free the Gastonia prisoners." The strike centered on the Loray Mill in Gastonia, North Carolina, where textile workers walked out in 1929 over low wages and harsh conditions. After a deadly confrontation that spring, a number of strikers were arrested and charged, and the International Labor Defense, which published this magazine, took up their defense. The halftone reproduction shows how labor papers of the period used bold graphic cover designs to rally supporters beyond the South. The caption information in the record is unverified, so details of the image itself should be checked against the magazine.
