Mount Shasta, a volcanic peak rising to about 14,000 feet in far northern California, stands apart from the granite Sierra Nevada views that dominate most images of the state's scenery. Its isolated cone, visible for great distances across the surrounding valleys, drew many photographers working the western mountains in the 1870s. This print is an albumen image, made from a mammoth plate, a large-format negative that captured fine detail in the mountain's slopes and surrounding terrain. Albumen was the standard commercial printing process of the period, and its glossy, warm-toned surface gives the mountain a soft, luminous quality worth noticing.
