A group of children moves in a loop around a schoolroom in this cyanotype, the blue-toned process that was common among amateur and professional photographers in the 1890s. Frances Benjamin Johnston, who made the picture and whose collection holds it, spent much of her career photographing Washington life and its institutions. Marching and circle games like this were a staple of the kindergarten and primary classrooms of the period, which reflected the influence of Friedrich Froebel's ideas about structured play. The record dates the image to about 1899, a time when public schooling in the capital was expanding.
