Addressed to women on Long Island, this poster promotes a Home Defense Day offering exhibits, demonstrations, lectures, drills and music. Printed in 1941, months before the United States entered World War II, it reflects the nationwide effort to prepare civilians for air raids and other emergencies. The New York State WPA Art Project used silkscreen to make inexpensive posters in flat, bold color, and that technique gives the flag motif its graphic punch, a style well suited to public campaigns of the period.
