Baltimore in 1869 was Maryland's largest city, with a population of about a quarter million, and its economy rested on the harbor at the head of the Patapsco River. Shipping, flour milling, canning, clothing manufacture, and iron and steel works employed many of its workers, while the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad, headquartered in the city, tied its wharves to the Ohio Valley and the interior. Ten years after the Civil War, the city was still sorting out its divided loyalties, and many residents remembered the riots of 1861 when Union troops marched through the streets. Its rowhouse neighborhoods, church spires, and the Washington Monument on Mount Vernon Place made up the skyline that people would have recognized as home.
