Waynesburg, the county seat of Greene County in southwestern Pennsylvania, stood in 1897 at the heart of a region whose economy rested on bituminous coal. Mines in the county supplied fuel to industries in the Pittsburgh area, and their payrolls shaped who lived in town and what they could spend at its shops. The courthouse square was the center of county business, where lawyers, farmers, and miners gathered on court days and at election time. Waynesburg College, a small school tied to the Methodist Protestant church, gave the town a second center of learning and social life, with students and faculty a familiar sight on its streets. Residents would have known Waynesburg first as the seat of county government and the home of the college.

NotesAn original bird's-eye view map of Waynesburg, Pennsylvania, drawn in 1897. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives.
