A wide, unbroken sweep across the campus lets the viewer take in the whole layout at once: the grouping of buildings, the open lawns between them, and the paths that tied the grounds together. Panoramic campus views like this were popular from the late 1800s into the early 1900s, when schools wanted to show off their growing facilities to students, donors and prospective families. Such images also record how people moved through a campus, since the broad open spaces were where students gathered and where processions and ceremonies could take place. Look along the edges of the frame for the smaller details of daily campus life.
