A quiet, unnamed sitter in a dark coat sets this daguerreotype apart from the many early portraits of its kind. Made in 1844, it dates to the first years of commercial photography, when a single sitting could take several minutes and the image was a unique mirror-like plate, not a paper print that could be copied. Daguerreotypes of this period were usually made by professional studios serving the growing middle class, and the subject's dark clothing was a common choice, since light fabrics tended to render poorly on the silvered copper. Looking closely, the viewer sees the sharp detail that made the process famous, along with the soft tonal shifts that come from its silver surfaces.
