Ilonka Karasz's color cover for the December 1915 issue of *The Masses* shows a single dancer, a subject that sets it apart from the political cartoons and social commentary that usually filled the radical New York monthly. Karasz, a Hungarian-born artist, brought a flat, decorative modernism to the magazine, and her cover stands out among its illustrated pages of the period. Dance was a popular subject in the 1910s, when Isadora Duncan's free movement and the ballroom craze led by Vernon and Irene Castle drew wide public attention.
