The Massachusetts Nautical School, named in this glass negative's title, was a state institution that trained boys in seamanship and maritime skills, preparing many for work at sea. This plate dates to September 7, 1923, and belongs to the National Photo Company Collection, a body of work produced by a Washington, D.C. commercial studio that documented people, buildings and events across the early twentieth century. The record notes that the original title came from data supplied by the studio on the negative sleeve and has not been independently verified, and that the glass shows streaks and blemishes from the deterioration of its coating over time.
