Wellesley College, the women's liberal arts school on the shore of Lake Waban in Massachusetts, is the subject of this glass negative, one of the many architectural and campus views the Bain News Service produced in the early twentieth century. The record gives no date, and the title comes from caption information the agency wrote on the negative or its card, which has not been independently verified. Bain's photographers worked for newspapers and magazines that needed quick images of notable places and people, so campus scenes like this one were often sold for use in articles about education and women's higher learning. Wellesley, founded in 1870, was among the best-known women's colleges of its era, which gives the picture its main historical interest.
