This glass negative from the Bain News Service shows Irving Brokaw on the ice, the figure skating that made him a recognizable name in New York society in the early 1900s. Brokaw was a wealthy amateur who skated in the city's fashionable rinks and also worked as a painter. Bain's photographers covered such society figures and sporting events for newspapers, so the picture offers a window onto the leisure culture of the period. The record gives no firm date, and the title comes from the agency's caption cards, which were not always verified.
