Here a man carries a woman through the surf, and the French title, "La planche," points to the wooden plank or boardwalk that lined many seaside resorts of the period. Postcards like this were produced in large numbers from about 1900 to 1914, when visiting the coast had become a fashionable pastime for the middle classes. Their playful flirtations, often shown on the beach or in the water, made them popular greetings and keepsakes. The hand coloring, applied to a printed base, gave the scene the soft pastel tones that collectors still prize.
