Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, is the setting here, and the 1863 date places the view just after the battle that took place in and around the town that July. The town's crossroads and buildings were fought over across three days, and by the time this view was made, the community was still dealing with the aftermath: wounded soldiers, burials, and damaged homes and fences.
