Idaho was only a few years old as a state when this map was drawn, having entered the Union on July 3, 1890, after decades of mining camps and territorial politics. Silver and lead mining in the north, especially around Coeur d'Alene, drove much of the economy, while gold towns that began in the 1860s still dotted the mountains. The Oregon Short Line linked the state to Utah and the Pacific Northwest, and irrigation canals along the Snake River and in the Boise Valley were opening farmland to settlers. Boise, the territorial capital, became the state capital at statehood and grew as the seat of government and a center for farm trade.
