The record identifies this glass negative as a portrait of Rex Beach, the American novelist whose Alaska and Klondike adventure stories, including *The Spoilers* (1906), were widely read in the early twentieth century. The negative comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection, made by the Bain News Service, a New York photo agency that supplied newspapers with images of public figures. The catalog gives no firm date, and the name comes from the agency's own caption data, so it is worth treating as a working identification. Still, the collection's glass plates capture the look of press photography in the years before halftone reproduction became routine.
