A figure in a porter's uniform stands surrounded by question marks, a graphic device that the record ties to railroad work and to the question of who held such jobs. Sleeping-car porters were among the largest groups of Black men employed in the United States at the time, working long shifts on Pullman cars for wages that depended heavily on tips. The subject headings also include gambling, a theme that popular magazines of the period often used when portraying Black workers. The caption card is unverified, so the illustrator's intent is best read from the drawing itself.
