Asking French viewers to contribute to a fund for the fusiliers marins, the naval gunners who fought on land, and for the Breton soldier, this 1917 poster by C. Trubert is a two-color lithograph. Its pairing of a naval unit with a Breton soldier ties a regional identity to the national war effort. Brittany supplied many men to the French army and navy, and appeals like this one used such local loyalties to reach civilians far from the front. Wartime posters of this kind were a common way for charities and the state to raise money and sympathy as the conflict dragged on.
