The autograph collector is a 1937 item from the Library of Congress's Prints and Photographs Division, and its title points to a hobby that was popular long before the internet made signatures easy to trade. Collectors of the 1930s often sought letters, documents and signed photographs from public figures, and the pursuit carried a certain charm of persistence and luck. The record gives little beyond the title and year, so the image is best read as a glimpse of a pastime from that decade, when personal contact with famous names still counted for a great deal.
