The sitter is recorded as Clara Alderton, though that title comes from data the National Photo Company noted on the negative or its sleeve and has not been independently verified. The National Photo Company worked in Washington, D.C., in the early twentieth century, producing a large body of portraits and street scenes on glass plates no larger than 4 by 5 inches. Visitors should notice the streaks and spots across the surface, which result from natural deterioration of the original coatings rather than from the scene itself. The negative came to the Library of Congress as a gift from Herbert A. French in 1947.
