The record describes a Japanese ukiyo-e print dated 1750 but names no specific scene, performer or place, so the subject is best read from the image itself. Ukiyo-e, meaning "pictures of the floating world," were woodblock prints made largely in Edo, now Tokyo, that showed actors, courtesans, city life and landscapes for a broad urban audience. The date deserves a closer look, since full-color nishiki-e printing did not appear until the 1760s, which suggests the print may be an early two-color or hand-colored example or that the date is approximate.
