Dated 1750 in its record, this woodblock print belongs to the mid-Edo period, when ukiyo-e, or "pictures of the floating world," were a popular form of urban entertainment in Japan. At that time, most prints were made with a limited palette, often black ink with hand-applied color, because multicolor woodblock printing was not yet common. Ukiyo-e typically showed actors, courtesans, scenes of city life, and landscapes, and it was produced in large editions that reached a broad middle-class audience.
