The only identifying detail for this negative is its title, "Silver," which the Bain News Service recorded from caption cards and which the Library of Congress has not verified. No date survives in the record, and the negative is a glass plate of five by seven inches or smaller, a format the agency used widely for news and feature pictures in the early twentieth century. George Grantham Bain founded the New York service around 1899 to supply photographs to newspapers, so the image is best read as an example of that working practice: quickly made, captioned for publication, and later catalogued often by title alone.
