Snow buries a rail line in this 1871 Currier & Ives lithograph, where a locomotive and its cars labor through a drift while the surrounding countryside lies stilled under white. The firm, based in New York, turned out thousands of such scenes for a mass market, and its railroad pictures from the 1870s often showed the trains as heroic and dependable even in bad weather. Winter travel was a real hazard in that era, when snowdrifts could halt service for days, so the print speaks to both the romance and the struggle of the rails. Its catalog number in the Gale Research raisonné places it among the firm's documented works of the decade.
