This print is titled simply "All Generals," so it appears to gather the commanders associated with the Battle of Gettysburg rather than show a single scene. The fighting took place around the small Pennsylvania town from July 1 to 3, 1863, and the Union and Confederate leaders who directed it, including George Meade and Robert E. Lee, became the public faces of the campaign. Multi-figure portrait prints like this one were popular in the decades after the war, when many readers wanted to put names and faces to a battle that had become a national memory.
