Clarence Mackay, the telegraph and cable executive who built the Harbor Hill estate on Long Island, is paired here with James W. Gerard, though the record's title is unverified. Mackay headed the Postal Telegraph and Commercial Cable companies and was a prominent figure in New York society in the early twentieth century, while Gerard was a New York lawyer who later served as United States ambassador to Germany from 1913 to 1917. The glass negative comes from the Bain News Service, a New York agency that supplied press photographs of public figures, so it reflects the demand for portraits of prominent men of the period.
