The title on this glass negative names only "C. Whitehill," and the record notes that the name comes from unverified information written on the negative or its caption card, so the sitter's identity should be treated as uncertain. The negative belongs to the George Grantham Bain Collection, made by a New York wire-photo service that supplied newspapers with news pictures and portraits of public figures in the early twentieth century. Bain's studio worked mainly in large-format glass plates, which were quick to print and easy to send out to editors. Because the record gives no date, the picture is best understood through that working practice: a plate prepared for rapid publication, with its caption written by hand, often by someone other than the photographer.
