The only identifying detail this glass negative carries is the name L.D. Mayes, taken from caption cards that the Bain News Service attached to its plates, though the record notes that the attribution has not been verified. Founded in New York in 1899 by George Grantham Bain, the agency supplied newspapers with photographs of news events, public figures, and everyday scenes, and its plates were usually made on glass, which held fine detail at small sizes like this one. Because the record gives no date, the image is best placed in the agency's working years in the early twentieth century, when glass negatives were the standard medium.
