Pablo Casals, the Catalan cellist and conductor, is the named subject of this glass negative from the Bain News Service, a New York press agency that photographed performers and public figures in the early 1900s. The record gives no date, and the title comes from caption data supplied by the agency, so the identification has not been independently verified. Casals was admired for his performances of Bach's solo cello suites and drew wide attention on his American tours. Glass negatives like this one were the standard medium for news photographs of the period.
