Will Rogers, the Oklahoma-born humorist and trick roper who became one of the most popular performers of the 1920s and 1930s, is pictured here at a game of horseshoes. The picture belongs to the George Grantham Bain Collection, the glass-negative files of the Bain News Service, a New York agency that supplied photographs of newsmakers to newspapers. Horseshoes was a common outdoor pastime, and the scene offers a relaxed glimpse of a public figure away from the stage. The record gives no date, so the caption is the agency's own label and has not been independently verified.
