*Three Friends* is a Biograph film, and this poster advertises it under the company's release number 8285. Biograph, based in New York, was one of the leading American studios of the early 1910s, known for its short films and for the work of director D.W. Griffith. The lithograph, printed in color in Cleveland by A.B.C. Co. in 1913, shows the period's approach to film advertising: large, bold images meant to catch the eye of passersby and draw them into the theater. Its subject headings point to men gathered around eating and drinking, a common social setting in the story-driven films of the time.
