Advertising a movie house rather than a single film, this color lithograph for The Pastime moving picture show was probably printed in 1913, when storefront theaters were spreading through American towns. Its subject, a group of bathing beauties, reflects a common tactic of the period, as posters used glamorous, lightly dressed women to draw crowds to shows that changed often. Color lithography was the standard method for such bills, letting printers produce large runs of bright, eye-catching sheets for shop windows and walls.
