A gnome with a mandolin sits among a flock of birds, and the German title, Lustiges Quartett, or "merry quartet," frames the scene as a playful musical gathering. Gnomes and other small folk from German tradition, known as Zwerge or Kobolde, were popular subjects for illustrators and postcard makers in the late 1800s and early 1900s. Images like this one softened those old forest spirits into friendly companions for children and sentimental audiences. Their presence among angels and fairies shows how whimsical figures sat alongside more devotional art in that period.
