Adelaide Herrmann's name on this print ties it to a stage magician of the late 1800s and early 1900s, and the title, "sleeping beauty," points to a theatrical illusion rather than a portrait. The caption card gives no date, and the record credits the photoprint to Dietz. Herrmann performed in her own right, and after her husband, the magician Alexander Herrmann, died in 1896, she continued touring with her own act. Publicity photographs like this one helped carry stage magic to audiences who could not see the performances in person.
