The caption names Marion Harris, the singer whose 1920s recordings made her one of the best-known voices of her day, but the Library of Congress notes that this identification comes from unverified data on the negative or its caption card. The Bain News Service, which George Grantham Bain started in New York around 1899, sent photographers to record newsmakers and public figures, and its early twentieth-century glass plates form a major record of that period. Because the sitter is unconfirmed, the plate's pose and setting are worth studying for clues, and the small-format negative shows how news photography was practiced before wire photos became common.
